The Best of the Mediterranean at Vlora

Embrace the flavors of the Mediterranean at Vlora, the funky Back Bay restaurant that presents a fusion of Greek, Albanian, and Southern Italian cuisine. Chef Aldo Velaj has created a menu inspired by his hometown in Albania, as well as the tastes of the wider Mediterranean—and the results are fantastic. From appetizers to desserts the menu offers a range of tastes and spices, from the Watermelon and Feta tidbit—a surprising combination of flavors and textures that works beautifully—to the Arancini Siciliani, Italian rice balls stuffed with feta and served in a tomato and mint sauce. Dessert is a must, especially The Kompekai, an Albanian style bread pudding chock full of pistachios and walnuts and topped with a wonderful crème anglaise. All of the ingredients are fresh, the service is friendly, and atmosphere is as laid back and inviting as the sunny Mediterranean.

Santarpio’s Pizza: A Boston Tradition for Pizza

Boston is known for its "pizza loving palate" and Santarpio’s takes the cake when it comes to authentic pies made with love. Family-owned by the Santarpio family, the restaurant has been open since 1903 in its no-frills, corner on Chelsea Street in East Boston. The walls of this rugged-looking institution are filled with old photographs of celebrities, sports stars, and local pizza lovers, all chronicling the establishment’s famed legacy.

The pizzas are known for having thin, crispy crust; fresh ingredients, and a backwards touch—when making a Santarpio’s pizza, the cheese is spread on the dough first and then the sauce! There are fresh toppings of all kinds, and if the fiery pepper pizzas get too hot to handle, firefight with a mug of chilled beer. The Halfway Café: American Food Done Right

Every month, The Halfway Café offers a new "7 for 7" menu, offering seven new, creative American dishes for seven dollars each. The café's sirloin tips are legendary with locals, cooked just how you want it with a side of "halfway" fries. The portions here are large, and it's a great place to meet up with friends or just pop in for a casual drink and bite to eat. The menu is made up of traditional American classics, and the burgers are a must-try, while the wings are a favorite appetizer. There's a good amount of outdoor seating available and it's situated nicely in the surrounding Plaza. The Halfway Café has a full bar and serves both dinner and lunch. Finbarr’s Auld Irish Pub: A Friendly Neighborhood Bar

There isn't a local in Canton who hasn't come to Finbarr's Auld Irish Pub and felt like they weren't on "Cheers." Finbarr's is the true definition of the neighborhood bar, and patrons will tell you it's the best on Washington Street. The beer selection is great, and so are the bangers and mash. Finbarr's has that authentic warm and cozy feeling that you look for in an Irish pub. There are large chairs and couches scattered about in all the right places for plunking down and having a conversation or watching one of the many large TV screens. It's in the middle of Canton Center, but parking is still fairly easy to come by out back. Finbarr's offers good food, good beer, and good times to all who stop by. It’s great for friends, meeting people, or just stopping in for a beer and a burger. Be sure to catch a Red Sox game when Finbarr’s excellent hot dogs are only a dollar!
